Spent a long time last night sanding and cleaning up the flight deck before gluing it in place this afternoon. (Note the forward elevator is up). I also added the aft elevator gallery deck walls and guides running down to the hangar deck. Then did a bit of hangar diorama, adding some random piece and a couple of SBDs. It appears that the aft elevator was so tiny that SBDs can’t even fit on it, so I’ll add a F4F later after the lowered elevator is painted.
With the flight deck in place, the elevator is the right distance from the flight deck – unlike the 2017 build, where the elevator was stuck at gallery deck level.
Today’s other discovery was how much better the ship looks with the degaussing cable in place on the hull. It gives it some linear movement, and is a clue why the prior model never looked quite right. (Another is that the older model never had the aft boat boom. The kit actually has two per side aft, but photos confirm that by May 1942 only the aft was in place – on both sides).
Next step – photoetch.
